What's in a name?

Lozi personal names are interesting and you can also see similarities and parallels with Gaelic and English nomenclature in Scotland. Most names in use come from SiLuyana the name given to the dialects that were originally spoken along the Zambezi and fairly widely in Western Province. It is generally agreed the people now called Lozi are of Congolese origin and established a Kingdom in this area in 17th Century. They were then called the Aluyana.

The name Lozi was acquired in 19th Century when in 1840 the Makololo an offshoot of the Southern Sotho under their leader Sebitwane overran the Luyana Kingdom after fleeing from Chaka the Zulu King during the Mfecane. The Makalolo ruled till 1864 when they in turn were overthrown by an Aluyana uprising. The Makololo men were wiped out but their women and children became part of the Luyana people. This made Sikololo, the language become the linga franca in Western Province. Sikololo then became Silozi which is a hybrid language, about 75% of the vocabulary Sotho in origin and 25% is Luyana

Names of Sotho origin are small in number but are widely used. They tend to have been inspired by the Bible. Below are some of the more commonly used:

Lifela - Vanity; Likezo -Deeds; Liseli -Light; Masiliso -Consolation; Musa -Mercy; Muhau -Grace; Pumulo -Rest; Sepo -Hope; Sepiso -Promise; Tabo -Joy; and, Tabuho -Thanksgiving. They can be used by either sex.

The Senior Chief here at Mwandi is called Inyambo Yeta. These names are pure Siluyana and not Sisotho. Inyambo means a helper and Yeta is one who makes a vow.

Both Luyana and Sotho names are part of the cultural heritage of the Lozi people of which they are proud and use both feely.

  1. Married to a loving Lozi man who named his first son Amwalana and daughter Notulu. Kindly assist me with the meaning of these names.

  2. Amwalana means literally -they are watching him. It is a Siluyana name.
The closest European equivalent might be Gregory.
Notulu- the unexpected one. Siluyana again. Used by our Royal Family here in Mwandi. Miranda or Mirabelle might be the closest European names.

  3. Oh this bog has kept me homely. Cheers to you guys. Names are really fascinating most times when we know what they. My self and family have been experiencing catastrophic events simply because Tembo means elephant in swahili and we had to urgently rub the name off our childrens school trunks because they became a laughing stock.

  4. For the first time in 26 years, I finally know what my name Yeta means!!! Only yesterday, I asked my father for the 1000th time, who named me Yeta, and he finally confessed that it was him. But no one in my family could tell me what the name meant! Thank God for this blog!!! We are descendants of Sebitwane, and my great grandfather was a child who ran away after the massacre in 1864.

  9. Thank you guys. Why do Lozis have same surnames and first names? For example, Mwala Mwala, Ngenda Ngenda or Nawa Nawa?

  10. The Lozi custom of giving a 'double' name is normally to distinguish between two people in the same family with the same name. The double name is customarily given to the younger. So Mubita Mubita would mean something like Mubita Junior.

    1. Hi Maboshe greetings from home! According to Lisimba Maboshe means 1. Hardworkmanship or 2. grip. They are not mutually eclusive as a good workman has a firm grip on his tools and work. There is a Siluyana proverb related to the grip meaning. "Ukuboseka ukwanganya kwisana nyaci ni bakatondo" Gripping someone's arm is to encircle it, if provoking a buffalo you need a tree closeby. Meaning, if you are going to stir up trouble make sure you weigh up the consequences first! Hope this helps

    Unfortunately neither name is there.

    1. Hi according to Lisimba Masilokwa means ' the isolated or rejected one' His explanation is that your name like many others is connected to poverty, its causes and consequences. The poor were dispossessed and socially rejected, so lived both physically and materially on the edge as it were. Hope this helps. Keith
